like most users of this forum i got tired of the lousy battery life and constant switching of batterys while using my gizmondo so i decided to make my own triple capacity battery!

Like most of us know simply wiring 3.7 volts to the battery pins wouldlndt work so simply wiring an external battery wouldndt work like i initially planned so i set to work making a triple capacity one heres how i did it.

firstlt i dismanteled the gizmondo battery whcich basiccally entails unwrapping the metal foil which leaves you with a plastic frame and the cell and (heres the important part) the controll circuitry. if i can put 3.7volts into the two pins that go from the cell to the cuircuitry i can have as much power as i like so heres what i did next. i cut both pins leaving me with a loose cell and 2 metal straps from either side of the controll cuircitry. then i cut away th bottom half of the frame leaving the top intact (very important ) then i got two nokia 3310 batterys and did the same ( the cells inside the nokia batterys are the same dimensions which helps), i discarded the controll circuitry of the nokia batterys. by now i have the gizmondo battery controll circuitry and 3 nearly identical cells. i then wrapped tape around all metal parts of the cells leaving the power tabs exposes (carefull whe you do this as it can short quite easily) then i identfied cathodes and anodes on the 3 cells becuase they are all different (using an led) and wired all + and -s together carefully insulating at each stage.

after this i wire all + and -s to gizmondo battery controll circuitry from the orginial battery and clip the connctors back inside the batetery compartment.

after this i tape all the insulated batterys together and stack them on top of each other then put them in this order from the bottom gizmondo battertt then 2 nokia batterys. covered the back in black insulating tape for looks and plug the charger in and charge your 3000mah battery for 12 hours. of course these batterys are even thicker than the premium and have no back case but if you place the tape around the back its till pretty comfortable to hold! so far have used gizmondo 5 hours today and battery bar has only gone down 1 bar from full (mostly trailblazer)

thanks for reading and please excuse the typos im typing this on an OQO

thanks and any qustions dont hesistate to ask

also if pictures are wanted just say and ill do my best

Cool...

Some pics would be nice.

How hot does the battery get when it runs and when charging?

okay ill do my best for the pics probably early tomoz or tomoz evning becuase it means i have to dismantle it, but im happy to do it for the giz community!

when running the only heat from the battery is from your hand holding it and when charging it only gets slightly warm. It does take 3times longer to charge but thats okay cos it lasts 3 times longer! (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

This is sounding promising. What sort of price are the Nokia batteries coming in at?

This can also help in pursuing those remaining official Giz batteries if we can demonstrate working alternatives. (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

the 3310 batterys are coming in at about 7 pounds each on ebay and its about 1 hours work to dismantle them carefully so they dont short and explode lol. then about 20 mins to fit and test.

I think we should air caution at this point (especially to the younger members of our community). I read these types of batteries can explode if overcharged and incorrectly wired/shorted.

I know this sounds pathetic but don't bugger about with cells if you don't know what you are doing.

You need all of (ok most of) your fingers and your eyes to play with your Gizmondo.

THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF

i was about to say be extremly careful with this mod as the entire metal case of the battery is the negative terminal and the postitive is normally very porrly insulation and with no control cuircitry a shorted battery can literally mean a room on fire!!

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

I'll have a picture of your house when it's burnt down.

No seriously you are taking a great risk. You can't just connect Lithium batteries together in parallel or series without the right protection circuits built in. Missmatch of cell voltages can cause internal heating and eventual cell breakdown. And if one of the cells goes short the other batteries will discharge at high current into the short and believe me you'll not be able to put the flames out when it does.

Lithium battery manufacturers don't sell loose cells to the public like they do NiMh or Nicad for this exact reason. They are dangerous and need to be joined in a carefully controlled way.

I have Designed power supplies and battery chargers for about 18 years now. One factory I worked in for 11 years burnt down because some batteries that were sitting on the shelf just decided to catch fire and launch themselves across the room one day. The fire extinguishers were useless and quite frankly the fire brigade were at a loss too.

So I would strongly discourage anyone from doing this.

I'm just going to ask one question here.

Are these baterries on sale? and if so, how much are you asking for?

as I am not cracking open a battery if it's going to set fire to the house in the night!

It's already been said but messing with lithum batteries is highly dangerous. Just buy the genuine thing from ebay for £14.99 for a 1800mAh.
