Well its been a while but we have been contacted by none other than Carl Freer, the man behind Gizmondo and its relaunch. we jumped at the oppertunity to keep the door open in the line of communication in the hope it may revive the community and the name of the Gizmondo.

We asked him the following quick questions just to test the water...

Are you worried that the Gizmondo has had its place in the sun?
QUOTE
Not at all...there is still incredible value in the Gizmondo. And with the enhancements we're adding (i.e. Open Platform etc) we feel its only the beginning of where we can go with the product.

Are there any scheduled plans that you can release?
QUOTE
We can tell you that the launch with include more than a relaunch of the same model. There will be many new facets to the launch. We have new products, suites of new games, enhancements to both the hardware and software components. Right now, we are on target for a 4th quarter 2008 launch but will be making a series of announcements shortly especially to the developer community. We want this to be a combined effort.

What sort of promotional push are you looking to do?
QUOTE
Our online sales and marketing efforts will be handled through a new complete Gizmondo website. The new site will include a place to purchase units, create games, download the new SDK, sell or distribute games etc. We have been getting a tremendous amount of feedback from current Gizmondo users on what they would like to see in the new release and including all of that into the new web environment.

Where is the best place to keep an eye out for Gizmondo official news/updates?
QUOTE
We will be relaunching http://www.gizmondo.com shortly .. until then, we will work to keep you posted on new events and announcements.

Update: on sending a few new questions i got these responses
sorry for caps this a copy and paste job

When you talk about the gizmondo re-launch will this be the same model we are used to, or have you been working on updating/upgrading the console with better graphics, GPS, software (e.g.: movie playback codec's, power management) , user interface, WIFI etc?
QUOTE
FOR V1 THERE WILL CERTAIN UPDATES INCLUDING A NEW GRAPHIC CHIP. ALSO WINDOWS OS WIN CE V6... THAT COMES WITH A LOT OF “NEW” GOODIES...

If there is a newer model... does this mean the current Gizmondo out there will be cut off?
QUOTE
NOPE. WE WILL SUPPORT ALL CURRENT GIZMONDO’S

If the Gizmondo model stayed as it is... Will there be an update for the devices already out in the market to use the services?
QUOTE
YES

Will the back catalogue be returned to the shelves such as stickyballs and colors?
QUOTE
YES THAT IS THE PLAN.

man of little words but i guess its striaght to the point

As we've just read we have found out this much...
  • Gizmondo due out end of the year
  • WIN CE 6.0 based OS Wince 6.0 wiki information
  • new GFX chip
  • It will be open platform with an SDK available
  • They will be hounding the developer community for support before release so anyone out there who fancies working on a project on the Gizmondo be ready to get in touch
  • return of gizmondo games from the past
  • old gizmondos to be revived
  • Gizmondo.com to make a return
Hopefully more direct and juicier information in time but for now it seams they are just passing out hints at whats to come.

so we've found out nothing really that new then... I would have asked what support would existing Gizmondo customer get? Or if they expect us to shell out for the upgrade copy/software

Hi Cbadds,

Dont worry my friend, I have already covered that..... (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) We've been building up some questions, and mine mainly covers existing Gizmondo (software/hardware) and will there be updates to GPS and what the plans are...

There is more to come.... (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Cheers,

Lister

most likely upgraded to 2mp but thats not really worth asking till closer to the date, i dont want to push them for 2mp then down the line 3 or 5 is just as cheap. lets see what happens.
i would be happy with 2mp but then what about people with the original giz?

my follow up question to this string would be..
how do you ensure the preformance of the old gizmondos updated wont be holding back the newer versions of the gizmondo? GFX and performance wise.

wince v6 sounds good tho...

Well, a new camera wouldnt really make any differnce to augmented reality which is the only thing that matters really, to be honest they are making a huge mistake compensating for old users they should start a-new 3MP wouldnt be too far fetched.

gizmondo.com isn't registered to Network Solutions, it's registered to the old Gizmondo, through Network Solutions as a registrar. It's currently showing a Network Solutions landing page, so Network Solutions must have realized that Gizmondo is gone so they might as well use it for advertising revenue. I imagine the recent registration of the Gizmondo trademarks is the first step in getting the domain handed over to the new Gizmondo, as Gizmondo registered it for 10 years, which is a long time to wait for expiry, but if you own the trademark, you can get a domain handed over.

I don't see any reason not to believe that was genuinely Freer, but he didn't really say much we didn't already know (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I'd say and upgrade to 2MP at the least is neccisary, 3.2 preferably, if they stick with the VGA they're making a mistake, most phones nowadays have at least 2MP

I'm curious about the WinCE 6, wouldnt that be a bit on the expensive side? Especially for something thats gonna cost 99 quid

It would be nice to see built in WiFi, if not, SDIO is a must, but if its got SDIO I'd want two SD slots, not having a storage device but having WiFi is a bit pointless
