Dawn of a new Gizmondo?

Gizmondo was sadly buried with the other flops of the gadget world with the “Nintendo Virtual boy” and “Tiger - no relation - Game.com”, but the last thing we were expecting was the sudden revival of the Gizmondo. New and old users alike you may have missed out on what’s going on and what’s due for release come the forth quarter.

It all started with rumours and speculation from various Swedish technology reports, badly translated into English we got a small glimpse into what may come. Then a website emerged giving us all a headache with various buzzwords that we are still puzzling over. See for yourself at http://www.gizmondolive.com "Exciting psychic worlds" indeed.

In various interviews with the big boss Carl Freer and Richard Jenkins we have found out that not only will the old Gizmondo be resuscitated but a new iteration of the Gizmondo is coming with beefier hardware and a brand new operating system software update.

Some of the updates include; new graphics chip, WIFI, Windows Mobile 6 OS, open platform for more flexibility for development (SDK), new global positioning chip (possibly sirf3)

Now the new operating system is a good thing, it will hopefully mean there’s more support for newer software and also allow Gizmondo to push some of its features harder. Although we have recently learnt Gizmondo may be introducing an Android version of the Gizmondo which will greatly improve its open source development stance.

They have obviously been listening to our complaints as the big three requests GFX, GPS and WIFI have all been added to the new version but whether they draw in more people is the big question.

We have learned that the new Gizmondo release will not leave older Gizmondos in the dust! They will be brought along for the ride with a free service to replace old batteries and update their software to access all the latest features. Unfortunately if the Gizmondo 2 does include the new hardware features the old versions may be left behind due to just not being powerful enough.

Lastly we are on the brink of a media blowout with the official Gizmondo site soon to be re-launched we will have to hope it answers many unanswered questions and drops jaws.

Gizmondo has been scared by failure before but I feel the second time round they have their sights set on what they want instead of placing themselves in a “jack of all trades, master of none” position they are going for the open source market head on. Gizmondo is still a sexy device (stop sniggering) and I feel it has a great future.
