Ok, here's a very much *alpha* release of SquidgeNgine, just so you know I'm not pretending to do stuff like this...

If you want to try it, you MUST extract this to your root directory of your sd card. That means it should not be in a directory (ie. if your card reader is drive F:, you extract to F:\)

You need to copy roms into the roms directory. The filenames must be in the formal romname.pce. For now, there must be at least two roms, and don't choose the first or it'll crash. I may get around to fixing these bugs later.

No, you can't play the games, as I've only done the input for the menu system so far.

Now the bad news, it currently runs at about half the speed of the gp2x version. This is with full optimisation selected on the compiler.

Skin I've pinched from SquidgeSNES.

It is alpha release not even an BETA, what did you expect?
LOL

It will be good, time will tell...
GP2x is linux based so it has to be emulated, because the GIZ is Windows based...

Give it some time...

Thanks squidge KEEP UP!

Wow, just gave it a try and it's really good!
Im loving the menus and everything, it's so proffessional!

Mapping the buttons shouldnt be too hard, seeing what you've already done so far *hint* *hint* (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Seriously, man, keep that sh*t up! (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Oh, and an exit button would also be good! (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

ROMs are copyright, they can't be distributed easily. You also can't talk about where to get them on these forums.

Thanks Squidge, it's lovely to see some of this sort of stuff.

I'm looking forward to the day that I can play PLOK! using the Giz (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Ok, this is why its so slow currently:

It takes 12ms to render a PCE frame (giving ~80fps in r-type for example)
It takes 54ms to get the Giz to actually display that frame.
Total: 66ms (15 fps)

So the Giz is clearly running at 400Mhz (the same code on the GP2X @ 200mhz takes roughly 24ms compared to the Giz's ~12ms), but is being let down seriously by frame buffer access (54ms on the Giz, 2ms on the GP2X, which is why the GP2X is much faster with a slower processor)

Now to investigate why the frame buffer is so slow on the Giz. I must be doing something wrong.

It would be much faster than 15 fps if it wasn't so slow at writing to the Giz's frame buffer.

Obviously the Giz was optimized for 3D games rather than 2D.

Hmmm, I wonder if I create a couple of triangles to fill the Giz's display and then texture map them, whether or not that'll actually be faster? Would be pretty funny if it was (IMG:https://gizmondoforums.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
